The soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia) of the body can hold tension and become restricted due to poor movement patterns, altered posture, stress, accidents/injuries, emotional disturbances, etc. The joints (where two bones meet) can also get restricted as a result of soft tissue limitations, injury, poor posture/positioning, degenerative changes, or lack of use. Mobilizations to these tissues help alleviate pain, improve flexibility and mobility, and improve overall alignment and function.
Dry needling uses a sterile technique to apply thin monofilament needles through the skin into affected tissues to release trigger points and muscular tension. This can result in immediate reductions in pain and muscle tightness as well as improved flexibility.
Plastic cups are applied using handheld suction to lift the skin away from the muscles to allow for decompression of the affected area. In addition, increased blood flow occurs where the cup is applied. Cups are usually left in place for 5-10 minutes, but a dynamic strategy may also be used to allow for decompression throughout a greater range of motion. Bruising is a common effect and any concerns should be discussed with the practitioner prior to treatment.
Our bodies love movement, but there is no one size fits all when it comes to exercise. Working with a physical therapist allows you to learn your own personal strengths as well as areas to focus on to reduce pain and maximize function. Stretching helps increase pliability of the soft tissues while exercises can help protect you from injury. Together they can improve your quality of life and quality of movement!
